The Falakiyah Institute of the Nahdlatul Ulama (LF PBNU) issued the hilal data for the 29th of Rajab 1444 H along with instructions for the beginning of Sha’ban 1444 H to all Nahdlatul Ulama observers on Sunday (19/2/2023). The sighting will be conducted on Monday (20/2/2023) evening.
The hilal data and instructions for the beginning of Sha’ban were contained in LF PBNU Letter No. 011/LF-PBNU/II/2023, signed by LF PBNU Chairman KH Sirril Wafa and Secretary H Asmui Mansur on Sunday (19/2/2023).
The hilal for the 29th of Rajab 1444 H is already above the horizon, precisely at +2 degrees 34 minutes 53 seconds, with the center at the PBNU Office, Jalan Kramat Raya 164, Jakarta, coordinates 6º 11’ 25” LS 106º 50’ 50” BT. The conjunction or ijtimak of the moon occurs on Monday, February 20, 2023, at 14:08:18 WIB.
Meanwhile, the position of the sunset is at 11 degrees 04 minutes 24 seconds south of the west point, while the position of the hilal is at 13 degrees 57 minutes 02 seconds south of the west point.
The position of the hilal is at 2 degrees 53 minutes 29 seconds south of the sun, sloping to the south with an elongation of 4 degrees 47 minutes 10 seconds. The length of the hilal is 12 minutes 35 seconds.
Based on the same falak method, it is known that the smallest hilal parameter occurs in Jayapura City, Papua Province, with a mar’i hilal height of 1 degree 11 minutes, a hakiki elongation of 4 degrees 21 minutes, and a length of the hilal above the horizon of 7 minutes and 8 seconds. Meanwhile, the largest hilal parameter occurs in Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi, West Java Province, with a mar’i hilal height of 2 degrees 25 minutes, a hakiki elongation of 4 degrees 48 minutes, and a length of the hilal above the horizon of 12 minutes and 50 seconds.
The hilal height in all of Indonesia is already positive, meaning the hilal is above the horizon at sunset. However, the hilal height and elongation angle have not yet met the NU rukyah imkan criteria, which are a height of 3 degrees and an elongation of 6.4 degrees.
This means that the hilal is most likely not visible. Thus, the month of Rajab 1444 H will be completed for 30 days (istikmal).
If the istikmal report is confirmed, the beginning of Sha’ban will occur on Wednesday (22/2/2023). Meanwhile, Nisfu Sha’ban will also fall on Wednesday (8/3/2023).
For the certainty of the beginning and midpoint of Sha’ban 1444 H, Indonesian Muslims need to pay attention to the report that will be announced on Monday (20/2/2023) night.
